4TH INFANTRY DIVISION, 2003
I can report a friendly fire incident that caused a soldier from the 4th I.D. to sustain injuries from the incident.Fortunately for his sake he was wearing the new style body armor and one round hit his ceramic plate in his vest and he also received a wound to the arm. This was approximately July 5th or 6th 2003 at LSA Anaconda, AKA Ballad Air Base North of Bagdad,Iraq. The friendly fire was from soldiers who were manning the perimeter defenses and a platoon of Infantry from the 4th I.D were outside of the perimeter responding as a quick reaction force to a reported enemy threat who were in the vicinity firing mortars at the base.
I received this intel while working up in the base ops radio room (base was under the command of the 82nd ROC) and which was a duty I was assigned to on a temporary basis. The soldier was WIA and we were told the injury to the arm was non-life threatening.I was serving in Ballad as a member of Aco 2/124 Infantry U.S. Army National Guard. There was another incident where members of my platoon came under fire but we could not determine if it was friendly or enemy fire and will not be able to give any other info on that incident.
Respectfully,
SSG Whitley
